History matters, offering insights into who we are and where we’re going.

Beginning as a small church plant nearly 182 years ago, Grace Hill Church has endured a mixed history of fundamentalism and reformed theology, name changes (there have been three), building changes (over five locations), leadership turnover, and multiple mergers and splits.

How does a small church survive such instability?

Jesus is the Answer

Nine individuals come to the Wisconsin Territory to settle in the Town of Warren (now Village of Merton) with a desire to worship Jesus. On August 31st, a local church begins. The first baptism happens 18 months later in the Bark River.

Merge with Lisbon Baptist Church and hold meetings in Hartland.

Local services are first held in the Poler School House on Main St. (where the current Post Office is located).

Unite with Methodist Brethren Church for a series of revival meetings.

Call the first pastor and begin meeting in the new Merton School house.

The name is changed from Warren Baptist to First Baptist Church of Merton.

The church is incorporated and the proceedings are recorded in the state religious records.

The first building is completed at a cost of $2,000, featuring kerosene lights and a wood-burning stove on a parcel of land purchased for $50.

Church members vote to withdraw from the Northern Baptist Convention and unite with the General Association of Regular Baptists.

Members leave to begin local churches, including Calvary Baptist, Menomonee falls; Elmbrook Church, Brookfield; and First Baptist Church of Hartland.

Members leave to begin Lighthouse Baptist Church in Sussex (now Gospel Fellowship Church)

Church amends the constitution, affirming a plurality of Elders, and defining the Biblical role of both Elders and Deacons.

New building on Hickory Hill Drive is dedicated on Sunday, September 27th

Church members vote to withdraw from the General Association of Regular Baptists, and change name to Grace Hill Church.

Church members unanimously vote to partner with Trinity Fellowship Churches.

We are a church in the midst of a gospel resurgence. Want to find out how we've stuck around for so long? It's supernatural!

Don't believe it? Join us Sunday as we gather to worship. Come be a part of history as we follow Christ into this next season.
